New Geese Control Devices Installed Around City
New Geese Control Devices Installed Around City:
Quincy,
MA -- Commissioner of Natural Resources Dave Murphy announced that the City is
deploying geese control devices at various park locations around the city to
reduce the amount of geese that frequent the Quincy park system. Geese leave
behind quite a mess and the City aims to mitigate the problem prior to the
Spring high school and youth sports season.
The devices mimic the sound of a goose in distress and have worked as a
deterrent in other parts of the country. The intermittent distress calls occur
every ten minutes or so and appear to keep geese away from the areas where they
are being used.
“This is a humane, non-chemical way to address a problem that could impact the
public health of the young people that use our athletic fields,” said Murphy.
“The goose population has exploded in the past decade and the impacts are
easily noticed on the fields that they frequent. We have been searching for a
proper, humane, safe, and effective way to address this issue and I like what I
have seen so far.”
In past years, the City has hired companies to use dogs to chase geese off
fields. A safe chemical deterrent had been used in the past on a limited basis.
Both attempts provided brief relief, but the geese inevitably returned.
The devices will be used primarily at the park locations where geese frequent
the most and may be moved around based on the behavioral patterns of the geese
in the coming months.
